Do I Need a Zoned Home?

A zoned heating and cooling system separates your home into two (or more) zones which are set by its own thermostat. Are some areas in your home more comfortable than others? Do you have hot and cold spots? There are a number of factors that could play into this, but a zoned home comfort system just may be the one fix you need. Zoning will not only keep you more comfortable, but when teamed with programmable thermostats, it could also help you save on your heating and cooling expenses.

How Does It Work?

After the zones of your home have been determined, zoned heating and cooling operates by using dampers that are installed into your ductwork. These dampers control air flow throughout your home. Each zone of your home has its own thermostat installed to better personalize and control your comfort. All of the individual thermostats are tied in to a control panel that controls your HVAC system.

Is A Zoned Home Right for Me?

A simple way to envision the importance of zoning is to imagine you controlled every light in your home with the flick of an individual switch. That would be very inefficient and not practical at all. The same is true for having one thermostat taking care of your entire home. With a zoned heating and cooling system you have control of every zone of your home. Zones are typically mapped out by finding the areas in the home that have similar heating and cooling needs.

Even in homes that are appropriately insulated and constructed well can suffer from hot and cold spots. Some standard architectural features that result in this are multiple stories, large windows and vaulted ceilings. As we all learned in science class, heat rises. That means that your top floors are going to be warmer than lower levels. It only makes sense to have a specific thermostat for different levels of your home. Zoned homes can also be tailored to your family’s personal comfort desires.

A zoned home will not only save you money, but it is able to keep you and your family more comfortable.
