Why you should replace your air filter this winter

We encourage preventative maintenance on your heating and cooling system constantly, but this doesn’t just mean yearly tune-ups – it also refers to assessing your air filters. It’s a quick way to help keep your system running smoothly and enhance your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it all yourself! Now is the ideal time to check your filter, as the cooler weather comes to an end and heat is approaching. There are a lot of benefits to getting a replacement air filter, such as:

Increasing the life and efficiency of your system
A definite way to cause a system breakdown is a dirty air filter. Extra dirt that accumulates on your filter can influence your whole system to work harder than it should to keep you cool. Not only will it hinder the performance of your system, but it can increase your utility bills and cause your system to overheat.

Increasing indoor air quality
The reason for an air filter is that it catches contaminants through your air system before it enters your house. As the filter gets older, the less efficient it is in grabbing things like dust and mold that can hurt the health and comfort of your indoor space, particularly if someone in your house suffers from allergies or asthma. With warmer temps around the corner, pollen and mold are especially prone to be hanging around and you don’t want them traveling in your home. A quality, clean air filter will help your family breathe easy and remain healthy during allergy season.

Check your system or ask your HVAC technician for recommendations on how regularly you should be putting in a replacement filter. For many filters through Jack's Heating, Cooling, Stoves & Fireplaces, we recommend an annual change with the highest MERV filter available.
